Research advances in clinical laboratory diagnosis of Streptococcus suis infection

Abstract:Streptococcus suis(S.suis) is an important pathogen of zoonotic infectious diseases. Once human being suffered from S.suis, it will cause severe meningitis, septicemia, sometimes even cause death. Many related reports have been covered since Streptococcus suis serotype 2 was found to cause serious infection in human being for the first time in 1968. It is a rapid-developing critical disease with a high mortality and has nonspecific clinical symptoms at the early stage. An outbreak of people infected with S.suis in Ziyang and Neijiang of Sichuan Province from June to August 2005 had aroused extensive attention. S.suis is not only greatly harmful to culturist, but also underlying dangerous to public health security, so timely and early diagnoses have become the key question to control the prevalent of S.suis. At present, the common laboratory detection methods include microbial detection, immunoassay, molecular biological test and animal experiment method. This article reviews progress in the research of laboratory diagnosis of human infected with S.suis.
