Abstract:Birds, with their wide distribution, large populations and highly diverse species, play an important role in the spread of pathogens. This review highlights the characteristics of three sequencing strategies based on high-throughput sequencing technology—16S rDNA sequencing, metagenomic sequencing, and metatranscriptomic sequencing—and their applications in understanding the avian gut microbiota, antibiotic resistance genes and pathogenic microorganisms. Future perspectives in this field are also discussed.
