Abstract:To investigate the relationship between Borna disease virus (BDV) and the human psychiatric disorders and the frequency of the BDV infection in China. The P24 fragments of BDV RNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from 31 patients with schizophrenia, 16 patients with affective disorders and 50 healthy donors were detected by nested RT-PCR and fluorescence quantitative (FQ) PCR.The results showed that the positive rate of the P24 fragment of BDV RNA in PBMC from patients with schizophrenia( 9.7%) was higher than that of patients with affective disorders (0 %) and of healthy donors (0 % ), but the differences did not reach statistical significance. These results suggest that BDV infection exists in the psychiatric patients in China. Further study is necessary to clarify the possible association between BDV infection and the onset of human psychiatric disorders.
