Abstract:Objectives To understand the epidemiological characteristics of diarrhea caused by Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) and Capylobacter coli (C. coli) and carrier rate in general population in Guangxi, which will be helpful for developing control measures. Methods Epidemiological investigation was carried out and stool samples were collected on general population younger than 5 years, pig farmers, pig slaughters, as well as pigs and poultry in farms and markets. The specimens collected were cultured for C. Jejuni and C. Coli. PCR and PFGE were applied for identification of the campylobacter isolated. Results Of the specimens tested, 2.13% were positive for Campylobacter, and 1.12% and 1.02% were positive for C. Jejuni and C. Coli, respectively. Among patients with diarrhea, 0.89% was positive for Campylobacter. The positive rates were higher in population aged under 5 years and those aged 20~29 years. Campylobacter was isolated in all seasons excepted for winter. Among general population, the positive rate for campylobacter was 8.26%. And the highest positive rate for C. Jejuni was found in population under 2 years of age, while C. Coli were isolated from all ages of the population. The positive rate for Campylobacter in chicken and pig was 3.23%. And the positive rates for C. Jejuni and C. Coli were 1.29% and 1.94%, respectively. There was no significant difference in positive rate between these two sorts of animals. Reconfirmation with PCR was positive for all isolates which were positive for biochemical tests. Conclusion The prevalence of C. Jejuni and C. Coli in population and animals was diverse and complicated.
