Abstract:Campylobacter fetus (C. fetus) is a zoonotic pathogen that causes extraintestinal infection (bacteremia, meningitis, arthritis, etc.) in humans and abortion and infertility in animals. The C. fetus infection is common in cattle, sheep, and reptiles while rare in humans except those with chronic diseases. Biochemical and nucleic acid techniques are widely used to discriminate C. fetus subsp fetus and C. fetus subsp venerealis. Growths of C. fetus at 42 ℃ are in controversy. The applications and advantages versus disadvantages of methods for molecular characterizing of C. fetus, namely, Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD), Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP), Pulse Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE), and Multi-locus Sequence Typing (MLST) were reviewed.
