Epidemiology of Pneumocystis colonization and the role in pulmonary diseases

Abstract:Pneumocystis is an atypical opportunistic fungus. It has long been recognized that Pneumocystis infection as a cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised populations, particularly those with HIV infection. However, recent studies have found that Pneumocystis may colonize in nonimmunosuppressed host and also play a role in development or progression of various pulmonary diseases. Therefore, the importance of Pneumocystis colonization has been an increasing focus of research in the last several years. This review will discuss the Pneumocystis colonization and its role in pulmonary diseases.
