Abstract:Apicomplexan parasites, such as Toxoplasma gondii, Cryptosporidium spp., Plasmodium spp., Babesia spp., Eimeria spp. etc., are obligate intracellular protozoa and important pathogens of humans and animals. They have conserved subcellular structures and invasion mechanism. Rhoptry proteins (ROPs), which released into the host cell, are considered to be the key molecules of invasion and replication of parasites in host cell. ROP18, one of active serine/threonine kinase of ROP2 protein family, plays an important role during invading into host cell, and is an immunosuppressive factor of the host cell-mediated immunity in the stage of parasitophorous vacuole (PV) formation. The knowledge about ROP18 has made great progress with the development of genomics and proteomics. In this paper, as an example of Toxoplasma gondii ROP18, we reviewed the finding history, structure, secretion and allocation, virulence mechanism and application status of ROP18.
