Abstract:The study was conducted at Chittagong Zoo, Bangladesh from July to September 2012 to determine the occurrence of tuberculosis in monkeys. A total of 46 sick, dull and apparently emaciated rhesus macaques of 10 to 21 months of age were marked and given intradermal tuberculin and kept in quarantine for three days where only seven (15.22%) showed positive. In the tested-positive animals, five were died within one month and showed tubercle on lungs in postmortem examination. The lungs samples were collected for Zeihl Neelsen staining and histopathological study. Acid-fast mycobacterium organisms were found in Zeihl Neelsen staining and histopathology revealed the presence of tuberculus granuloma with inner core of epithelioid macrophages surrounded by an outer ring of lymphocytes and neutrophils and heavy proliferation of fibrous tissue in parenchyma and thickening of alveolar wall in lungs. The above examinations confirmed that the macaques were suffering from tuberculosis.
