Abstract:In this study, we identified bacteria strain from the blood sample of a patient in a suspected epidemic of human Streptococcus suis infections, investigated the etiologic characteristics and provided etiologic basis for epidemic determination and the diagnosis and treatment of the patient. Suspicious bacteria strain of S. suis from the blood sample of a patient in a suspected epidemic of Streptococcus suis infections was identified using gram staining, serum agglutination test and biochemical test. Streptococcus suis species specific gene 16S rRNA, Streptococcus suis serotype 2 specific virulence gene capsule polysaccharide 2J (cps2J) and virulence gene muramidase-released protein (mrp), hemolysin gene (sly) and extracellular factor protein gene (ef) were further detected by PCR. The suspicious bacteria strain of S. suis was identified as Streptococcus suis type 2 by conventional methods and PCR. PCR detection results showed that 16S rRNA, cps2J, mrp, sly and ef genes of S. suis were positive. This epidemic was caused by human infection with virulent S. suis type 2, which provided etiologic basis for the epidemic determination and the diagnosis and treatment of the patient.
