We assessed the discriminatory ability of high resolution multilocus sequence typing (MLST) which was used as typing method of Chlamydia trachomatis strains from the outpatients visiting sexually transmitted infection clinic in Fuzhou City. Sequence types (STs) were compared with strains from women visiting the sexually transmitted infection clinic in Amsterdam. All samples were typed using MLST. The geographical distribution of STs was characterized by eBURST analysis. Full sequence types were obtained in 76 out of 86 C. trachomatis positive samples and 30 STs could be identified,of which 14 were novel to the MLST database. The Simpson’s index was found to be 0.90 for MLST. By the eBURST analysis,30 STs were assigned to 3 clonal complexes and 5 singletons. Only 4 STs were identical between Fuzhou City and Amsterdam. MLST provides a high-resolution tool for epidemiological investigations. The eBURST analysis can reveal the evolutionary relationship among C. trachomatis strains from different geographic sources.
