Genotype characteristics of Bartonella and the infection in rodents in Guangdong Province, China

Abstract:We investigated the distribution and genotype characteristics of Bartonella in rodents in Guangdong and provide scientific data for study of Bartonella and natural focal diseases control and prevention. Rodents were captured in five districts of Guangdong: Huilai, Huidong, Chaoan, Luoding and Gaozhou. Total nucleic acid from liver specimens was extracted and detected Bartonella using PCR. Positive simples were cultivated and the PCR products were sequenced. The phylogenetic analysis and statistical analysis were conducted. Results showed that totally 375 rodents were captured in five regions of Guangdong and 73 liver samples were positive for Batronella, the positive rate was 19.47%. There was no significant statistic differences between species(χ2=6.361),districts(χ2=7.778), gender(χ2=0.292) and habitats(χ2=0.621) (P>0.05). Of 73 specimens, 10 were positive in Bartonella culturing. The phylogenetic analysis illustrated that 6 genotypes of Bartonella were confirmed in rodents: Bartonella elizabethae, B.phoceensis, B.japonica, B.henselae, B.rochalimae, B.tribocorum. In Guangdong Province, Bartonella is widespread in rodents with obvious diverse genotypes. Four genotypes have potential hazard for human health.
