Abstract:To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of Angiostrongylus cantonensis infection in snail in southern of China, a total of 1 517 snails were collected from eight provinces and identified the third state larvae of A. cantonensis infection using digestion techniques during April to October 2016. The average infection rate of A. cantonensis in snails was 9.62% (146/1517). The rate in Achatina fulica was highest (16.78%), and followed by Pomacea canaliculata (13.91%). The infection rates in Bellamya aeruginosa and Cipangopaludina cathayensis were 6%, for each. And negative for other snails were found. The prevalence of A. cantonensis in snail from June to September ranged from 10.11%-14.02%, higher than that in other months(4.24%-6.22%),which showed as significant difference in the prevalence months (χ2=19.031,P<0.05). The infection rate in snail collected from natural environment was 22.28%(43/193),while the infection rate was 8.11%(97/1196)and 6.19%(6/97)respectively in samples from market and catering. In conclusion, there is an infection of A. cantonensis in the snail in some areas of south China, and eating raw and semi-raw snail meat has potential food safety risk. Deratization work enhancing supervision and management of snails food, standardizing the food operation, and strengthening food safety education are recommended in endemic areas.
