Abstract:Echinococcosis is a chronic parasitic disease caused by echinococcus larvae (echinococcus), which mainly occurs in pastoral population. It is a zoonotic parasitic disease that seriously endangers human health. Albendazole (ABZ) is the main therapy for this disease. Because of the low intestinal absorption rate of ABZ and the conversion of liver to drug, the bioavailability of ABZ is low. Previous studies have shown that acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) play important roles in the parasitic nervous system and ion channels, both of which are targets of new generation of insecticidal drugs. In order to improve the understanding of cholinergic system function of echinococcus, this paper reviews previous studies on AChE and nAChR of echinococcus and other parasites, and discusses their potential as suitable targets for vaccine development and drug design of echinococcus.
