Abstract:We report the first case of a human Naegleria fowleri infection, together with clinical and laboratory analyses. The parasite was observed in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through direct saline smearing, iodine staining and microscopic examination. The PCR generated products from the CSF were sequenced for homology analysis.Large numbers of amoebic cysts were visualized in the CSF through microscopy. The CSF was subjected to BGISEQ-500 detection, which identified sequence reads uniquely corresponding to the N. fowleri genome. This is the first case report of human N. fowleri infection in Fujian Province, China. The corresponding diagnosis and treatment of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis was simultaneously analyzed.
