Abstract:Diarrheal diseases caused by enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) pose a challenge to public health worldwide. During the adhesion of EPEC to intestinal cells, the interaction of intimin with the translocation receptor Tir triggers the assembly of actin, forming a tightly adherent base at the site of bacterial-host cell attachment. Intimin is not only an essential key factor allowing EPEC to produce characteristic attaching-and-effacing lesions, but also has different tissue orientation to the host. The intimin encoding gene eae, a target for identifying EPEC strains, has considerable heterogeneity and is an important genetic basis for EPEC typing. Moreover, LEE pathogenicity islands carrying different eae subtypes may be transferred horizontally among different serotypes of diarrheagenic E. coli strains. Thus, identification and typing of the eae gene of EPEC strains could provide a reference for surveillance and prediction of severity in EPEC diarrheal epidemics.
