Distribution and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella in Henan province,China,2011-2013 |

Abstract To investigate the distribution of Salmonella in the environment of Henan province and explore the different serotypes and drug sensitivity we collected 4,488 specimens from various sources including animal feces, raw and cooked meat products, and kitchenware etc. Salmonella isolation and cultivation, biochemical identification, and serological typing were performed on the samples. We used the K-B method recommended by CLSI to perform 13 antibiotic susceptibility tests on the isolated serotypes. A total of 332 Salmonella strains were detected from these samples, with a detection rate of 7.40%; these 332 Salmonella isolates belonged to 39 serotypes, including the dominant serotypes S.Enteritidis(23.79%)and S.Derby(20.18%). Salmonella in the environment has various degrees of resistance to multiple classes of antibiotics, among which the resistance rate to ampicillin, tetracycline, and nalidixic acid is the most serious. However, it is sensitive to third generation cephalosporins and quinolones. The distribution of Salmonella serotypes in the environment of Henan province was diverse, and the serotypes differed based upon the source. The emergence of strains resistant to commonly used antibacterial drugs suggests that attention should be paid to the hazards of environmental bacteria in terms of preventing and controlling foodborne diseases.
